The first papaya tree we have planted in our front yard few months
back is continuously flowering but had never given us any fruit until
now.

Accordingly, papaya trees can either be a male, a female or a bisexual. Bisexual or hermaphrodite that have both ovary and stamen and are self-fertile. They can produce fruits without the need of a male plant.
On the other hand, the female papaya ovary flower must receive pollen from a male or hermaphrodite papaya plant either carried by wind or insect. When pollination took place the ovary of female flower will swell up and will become fruit. When no pollination had occur the small fruit will then be aborted from the plant.

I believe the first papaya tree we had is a female plant because it has large single bloom flower with short stalks which is the characteristics of a female papaya. Male papayas has long thin stalks with slender flowers just like the picture below.

Now the problem is where are we going to find a male papaya tree or a hermaphrodite, so that pollination may take place?

The second plant we had is also a female because it has the same flower as the first one.

I don't know if the 3rd plant which is still around 2 feet tall will be a male or a hermaphrodite.
I hope it will be hermaphrodite so that we can finally have the fruits that we are waiting for so long to harvest.

ReplyDeleteI have never seen a papaya tree, so this is fascinating! The leaves are huge! I love the blossoms, the way they unfurl in a spiral!! I hope you get your deliscious fruit soon!!

ReplyDeletefor sure it will give you fruits in due time, we also have a papaya tree in our front yard, the flower is the same as the first photo.. it gives us small fruits are the tree is way too small also, i guess because the papaya tree was planted in watery area

We used to have this tall papaya tree at the back of our house. We had to cut it down though kasi pwedeng daanan ng magnanakaw. hehe.

Ganun pala yun? Sa amin, kusang tumutubo ang mga papaya trees. May ilan na hindi namumunga. Ang ginagawa lang namin, pinuputol para mamunga. May ilan na ang dami mamunga at walang hinto. As in. Yung iba pinapahinog bago kainin. Yung iba ginagawa kong atsara. Minsan sinasahog sa tinola. Yung iba hinahayaan ko sa puno mahinog at kainin ng mga ibon. Yun ung share nila :D
ReplyDeleteLearning so much about the papaya tree in this post. I think this is a good thing as growing papaya can give us a lot of benefits like harvesting free fruits all the time. I actually want to have one in our yard. :)
